Hello, Juniata family. My name is Jamie Mistretta ‘17, and I am the Editor in Chief of the Juniatian. My POE is in Special Education and Human Development and I am from Philadelphia, PA.
I first joined the Juniatian staff in Spring of 2015 as a columnist for Campus Spin, a section of the newspaper for campus related material. I started the Humans of Juniata column and fell in love with the Juniatian ever since.
The Juniatian newspaper, and it’s well-equipped student staff, was one of the first communities on campus that recognized my abilities and put them to work immediately. Each semester, I took another step up. I started as a columnist, moved up to a section editor (while still writing my column), and now here I am, proudly, as Editor in Chief.
Of course, with the recent, executive decision of no longer printing the newspaper, this leaves quite the challenge for the Juniatian staff and I. The Juniatian has been in print form for many years and has never experienced a transition quite like this one.
But the Juniatian will live on. Although challenging, the change allows for quite an adventure ahead, with new features, opportunities, and abilities we did not have access to before. This may be the end of an era, but the start of a whole new culture. We will not let student voice end just because it will no longer be printed on shelves every three weeks. We will not let student news be silenced.
I look forward to seeing the trouble we can create.
Hello, hello! I’m Liam Benfer ’18, serving as the Assistant Editor in Chief. I live in Millheim, PA and I’m working towards a POE in Professional Writing with Integrated Media.
I began working with the Juniatian as a News writer in the spring of 2015. When I returned to the Juniatian at the beginning of my Sophomore year, I was deemed Head News Editor.
As we begin this next chapter of our student newspaper, I’m excited be working with a crew who’s passionate about making sure the student voice is heard.
Hello! My name is Dan Shaffer ’17 and I am from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. As an International Studies Program of Emphasis with a Secondary Emphasis in German, I feel that writing and communicating with one another is an important skill to have!
I was not able to be a part of the writing staff during the 2015-2016 academic year, as I was studying abroad, however, I did write for the print version of the Juniatian during the 2014-2015 academic year. Since returning to Juniata and seeing the New Juniatian rise from the ashes of the print version, I am looking forward to the endless possibilities that we, as a staff, can bring to the campus!
Hi, New Juniatian followers! I am Taylor Smallwood ’19 and I am from York, Pennsylvania. Here at Juniata, I am pursuing a Program of Emphasis in Professional Writing. I love all things writing and communicating!
Hi, everyone! My name is Alyssa Fasolo. I am currently a sophomore and I’m from Altoona, Pennsylvania. I am pursing a POE in English and Secondary Education with the hopes of becoming a high school English teacher and a coach in the future. In addition to being a part of the Juniatian staff for the past three semesters, I am a member of the softball team here at Juniata.
I am fortunate enough to have been working on a school newspaper staff since my freshman year of high school, primarily as a writer, and also seeing experience in blogging and photography. Last year I served as a sports writer during my first semester and continued writing for the sports section while also being the editor of the Campus Spin in the spring.
I’m excited to work with everyone involved in the New Juniatian and see what new directions this paper can take!
Why, hello there! My name is Jacob Novak ’19 and I’ll be acting as the Web/Media Design Coordinator. I’m from Chesterland, Ohio and my POE is in Professional Writing and Digital Media Production.
I began my journey with the Juniatian as a news writer during the spring semester of the 2015-2016 academic year. It was a new and exciting challenge for me that allowed me to tap into new skills that I still use today, which makes me even more excited to be a part of this new venture for the newspaper. I hope you’ll join us for the ride!
Hello, name is Chelsea Scafuro! I am a junior pursuing a POE in Multimedia Communication. Geneva, Ohio, a small town just south of Lake Erie, is where I am from. Here at Juniata I am also a member of the women’s volleyball team and work in the Media Department as a web designer. I hope to apply my creativity and communication skills to the New Juniatian’s website through any design or digital media work. I look forward to collaborating with and learning new ideas from my fellow staff members in order to inform Juniata’s campus with exciting and quality news. The future for the Juniatian is very bright. I can’t wait to see how much it blossoms within the next year!
Hey guys! My name is Chris Peterson ’17 and I’m the new Social Media Coordinator at The Juniatian! I study Digital Marketing and International Studies and I’m from Chicago, Illinois.
This new chapter for the Juniatian is going to be an exciting one, and I couldn’t be happier to be a part of it. I’m passionate about new media and technology and hope to incorporate that enthusiasm into our social media to make it the best that it can be.
Hello! I am Kayla Shellenhamer and I am a freshman at Juniata College. My hometown is New Oxford, Pennsylvania; a small town right outside of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. I am pursuing a Program of Emphasis in English/Professional Writing, with a Secondary Emphasis in History (and no, I do not want to be a teacher). My future path is blurry, but not completely unclear. I either want to pursue a career in the publishing or public relations industry. I am excited to see the New Juniatian prosper and to be a part of a team that is trying to build something new and unique to the campus community!
